CuriePackSM is a one-of-a-kind, first-in-the-nation, pre-paid mail back system to facilitate the recycling of ionizing smoke alarms. The kit is cost-effective, easy to use and comes with detailed instructions and DOT function specific training tailored for the shipment of this particular kit.
The cubic meter CuriePackSM kit is a flexible intermediate bulk container. The bag is manufactured from woven polypropylene that is UV and water resistant. Design features include a duffel top closure with attached tie strings, four heavy duty corner lifting straps and a document pouch. The bag also comes with a 3 mil flexible polyethylene inner liner. The cubic meter CuriePackSM kit includes all packaging instructions, DOT markings, DOT function specific training and acknowledgement.
CuriePackSM kits are designed for shipping and recycling of ≤5 µCi Americium-241 (Am-241) intact smoke alarms. Prior to shipping, verify that alarms are Am-241 and 5 microcuries or less. This information is typically on the back of the alarm. If not, contact Curie prior to shipping. Activities >5 µCi Am-241, Ra-226 and Ni-63 alarms are acceptable but surcharges will apply.
Return shipping to Curie is priced separately based on the pickup location. Alternatively the customer may arrange shipping to Curie. The customer will provide a 40” x 48” standard pallet. Please contact Curie for return shipping costs.
Recycling cost is based on the as received smoke alarms by Curie. The recycling cost is $9/alarm for ≤5 µCi Am-241 smoke alarms received in the cubic meter CuriePackSM kit. Contact Curie for recycling costs for higher activity Am-241 alarms and any activity of Ra-226 and Ni-63 smoke alarms.
The CuriePackSM is designed to qualify as a DOT strong tight package for shipping as: UN2911, Radioactive materials – excepted package, articles, 7.
The capacity is approximately 1250 intact smoke alarms and is ideal for large businesses, e-waste processors, TSDs, large mobile HHW events and large permanent HHW collection facilities.
Please note: Unidentifiable or dissembled/stripped down smoke alarms will be surcharged at $9.00 per unit and are limited to thirty (30) per cubic meter CuriePackSM.
A Certificate of Transfer and Recycling will be provided after receipt and processing of the smoke alarms.
Pricing for the return kit is for any location in the lower 48 United States via UPS ground.
The cubic meter CuriePackSM shipping kit may also be shipped to/from Alaska, Hawaii or other states and US territories that require combination UPS air and ground shipments. This modified kit will also be in compliance with IATA for the air shipment portion of the consignment. Contact Curie customer service for additional transportation costs.
